Se denominan enfermedades raras o huérfanas, a aquella que afecta a un número limitado de personas, con respecto a la población en general, es decir a 1 de cada 2000 individuos, y que requiere esfuerzos especiales para poder tratarla; existen alrededor de entre 5000-7000 enfemedades raras, la mayoría de ellas causadas por defectos genéticos, y algo más de 4000 de éstas enfermedades no tienen tratamiento curativo.
